As communities are being adversely affected by the changes of the earth’s climate, the National Center for Community Strategies addresses climate change and the human activities that release excess carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

We conduct rigorous research on national and local policies to improve the health of the planet and the communities we live and work in.

We provide strategies that addresses the environment and community challenges of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, assessing risks, adapting to the impacts of climate change, and evaluating response strategies.

Global Warming

Globe

Did you know that since the late 19th century, Earth’s temperature has increased 2.0 degrees Fahrenheit? Most of the warming occurred in the past 35 years, with 16 of the 17 warmest years since 2001.

The National Center for Community Strategies’ global warming initiatives are to address the effects of regional severe weather. This includes heat waves and droughts, storms with extreme rain, snow, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, and the residual effects of rising rivers, streams and ocean waters, and its impact on low and middle class families nationwide.

Specifically but not limited to, we focus on innovative ideas, support services and programs that:

  • Identify public health needs and gaps related to extreme weather and public health preparedness.
  • Identify vulnerable populations adversely impacted by severe climate and weather changes, and strategies to improve preparedness for future events.
  • Provide communities with training and technical assistance, and collaborative support for developing emergency response systems for health and emergency management staff.
  • Provide high-quality curricula and training programs/ exercises designed to build community resilience, including useful tools and data sources.
  • Provide technical assistance, project management, quantifiable measurements, and train-the-trainer support strategies in emergency management operations.

Community Resilience

Aerial view of buildings Did you know that weather is the cause of 90% of the world’s global disasters, and that weather is estimated to cost $250 billion globally each year?

The National Center for Community Strategies assists communities to prepare, respond, and recover in the face of environmental and man-made disruptions caused by climate change or other factors through collaborative, innovative solutions. We partner with national and community leaders, organizations, and coalitions to identify and expand opportunities to deliver applied research, consulting, education, and training to build resilience in the face of climate change.

Specifically:

  • We focus on stakeholder capacity building at the local scale of preparedness and resilience nationally and internationally with an explicit awareness of social and climate justice.
  • We work to strengthen the evidence base for taking action on climate change, and developing tools for community leaders to take action on equitable climate-resilience approaches.
