People who kept insurance coverage on the ACA marketplaces and did not enroll in Medicare once they became eligible may seek a waiver to opt out of federal penalties. CMS is offering an “equitable relief” waiver to some Medicare beneficiaries who are now enrolled in Medicare Part A and coverage through the individual ACA marketplace. Each year, thousands of Americans miss their deadline to enroll in Medicare, and federal officials and consumer advocates worry that many of them mistakenly think they don’t need to sign up because they have purchased insurance on the health law’s marketplaces.
